Friday the 13th 2011 in Stokes Bay

panarama_2.jpg      The day kicked of at 12 noon with a BBQ of Hamburgers, Cheeseburgers, Hot Dogs or Sausage. For Bob, the day had started about six hours earlier as he set up the tables, hot plates and bar-b-ques.

There had been rain earlier in the morning and it still threatened to put a damper on the event but everyone had their fingers crossed, and it worked. The first vehicles showed up just after 1:00 p.m. and then a large influx appeared about 2:30 p.m. This was the cortege that had left UPI in Ferndale for Tim Hortons in Wiarton to meet riders/vehicles coming from the south, and would tour the Bruce Peninsula before arriving back at Stokes Bay. imgp0047.jpg

A couple of the first motorcycle to arrive decided to take to the hills only to be replaced by more coming in, and a couple of antique & classic vehicles.

There were door prize draws every 30-45 minutes (the prizes courtesy of local sponsors) for the participants. When a vehicle arrived, the driver went into the General Store to register and were given a draw ticket.

imgp0019.jpg      At one point mid-afternoon, MP Larry Miller made an appearance to enjoy a hamburger and conversation with some of those in attendance.

imgp0033.jpg      About 4:30 p.m. a real antique arrived, namely a 1928 Henderson motorcycle made by Excelsior Motor Mfg and Supply Co., Chicago, USA. As it turned out, this was the vehicle that took the “Farthest Distance Travelled” prize, as Dave Molnar had come from Varney, just outside of Durham, Ontario. Dave left at 6:00 p.m., hoping to miss any passing showers on the return home.

A few motorcycles kept arriving but about 5:00 p.m. a number of four-wheeled vehicles arrived and just after 6:00 p.m. a nice modern three-wheeled Spyder arrived.

At 7:00 p.m. the People’s Choice Awards were presented: Most Popular Motorcycle went to Gail Noble of Mar and the Most Popular Vehicle went to Jim & Joan Garner of Tobermory.

imgp0022.jpg      All in all it turned out to be a pretty good day for those attending (barring the light drizzle late afternoon). Many thanks must go to the sponsors of Friday the 13th North of the Checkerboard for their donation of prizes, namely: Fox Harley-Davidson of Owen Sound for Peoples Choice Motorcycle; Old Guy’s Garage of Springmount of Peoples Choice Vehicle; Pinkerton’s Auto Supply of Wiarton for Participant from the Greatest Distance; and for general door prizes from Chill Out Ice Cream Parlour of Ferndale, Petersen Motor Works of Owen Sound, Taylor-Made Bed & Breakfast of Lion’s Head, Tamarac Island Resort of Stokes Bay and last but not least, Bud & June Henderson of Cape Chin. We would like to say a HUGE THANK YOU to our prize sponsors. imgp0063.jpg
